Sergio Garcia wins the 2005 Booz Allen Classic and shakes off the "Wachovia Ghost"
Current PGA Tour News
After Sergio Garcia blew a six-stroke lead to lose the Wachovia Championship last month he felt haunted by what he called the "Wachovia Ghost". This week the spirits were kinder to him at the Booz Allen where he captured his sixth career PGA Tour title.
Adam Scott his closet rival hit a hard-luck shot into the water at No. 17 to end what looked like a promising rally. The 25-year-old Garcia shot a 6-under 65 to finish with a 14-under 270 total, two strokes ahead of Davis Love III (66), Ben Crane (67) and 2004 winner Scott (68). Garcia, not wanting to have another Wachovia open, played a spectacular front-nine 30, emerging from a host of contenders in the final tournament before the U.S. Open.
Garcia's 270 total tied the course record at Congressional Country Club, which didn't live up to its fearful reputation, in its first PGA Tour event in eight years. Garcia as usual performs well on classic courses, having winning results at the Westchester twice and Colonial.
Garcia looks to become the fist player to carry momentum from a tour victory before the U.S. Open as no other player has been able to accomplish that feat.
