Bank of America Colonial - Latest PGA Tour Golf News
Kenny Perry wins the 2005 Bank of America Colonial with a seven shot leadCurrent PGA Tour News Kenny Perry wins the 2005 Bank of America Colonial. Perry's win at Hogan's Alley two years ago was almost an after thought with Annika Sorenstam being the first woman in 58 years to play on the PGA Tour.
This time around Perry earned all of his accolades as he matched his tournament scoring record. The only disappointment came after a double bogey on the 17th hole Sunday which ensured that Perry wouldn't set a new tournament record. For the second time he finished at 19-under 261 and this year finished a full seven strokes ahead of Billy Mayfair. Yes, this Colonial victory was all Kenny Perry's and he deserved it!
Perry began Sunday with a seven-stroke cushion, a lead that no PGA Tour player has ever squandered in a final round. After Sergio Garcia's collapse at the Wachovia Open losing with a 6 shot lead on the final day, Kenny made sure there wouldn't be any challengers.
After a shaky start with Kenny Perry missing the fairway on the 563-yard opening hole, Perry made a 3-foot birdie putt. Perry then made and 11 foot put to go to 20 under at No. 5, on a tough 472-yard hole and that is when he knew he was on his game.
Perry went on to finish with the best 72-hole total on the PGA Tour this year, and the widest margin of victory.
When Kenny Perry won Colonial in 2003, it was the same tournament in which Sorenstam became the first woman in 58 years to play on the PGA Tour. After the LPGA standout missed the cut, Perry tied the course record with a third-round 61 and won at 19 under, six strokes ahead of Justin Leonard.
Kenny Perry after his win is just the 10th golfer to have his name engraved on the wall by the first tee twice. With the victory Perry joins likes of the other Colonial champions, Ben Hogan, Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Sam Snead and only five-time champion Hogan has won more than twice.
Perry won at Bay Hill in March which makes him the fourth multiple winner on tour this season. Vijay Singh, Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson have won three times. The Bank of America Colonial is the ninth career tour victory for Perry, who won just three titles in his first 16 seasons before the 2003 Colonial.
He didn't have any real problems at Colonial, playing 53 straight bogey-free holes between his 17th hole Thursday -- the 193-yard No. 8 -- and No. 17 Sunday, when he missed the green at the 394-yard hole and three-putted from 40 feet. 262 at the Bob Hope
