San Diego Chargers Chronological History

The San Diego Chargers were founded by legendary businessman Barron Hilton, owner of the Hilton chain of hotels. (And yes, he's also Paris Hilton's Grandfather).

1960 - Originally located in Los Angeles, the Chargers were one of six original charter members of the AFL. From 1960 to 1965, the Chargers went on a rampage, winning five division championships and one league crown in the AFL.

1964 - Keith Lincoln accounts for 349 yards of total offense as Chargers win AFL championship, defeating Boston 51-10, before 30,127 persons in Balboa Stadium.

1966 - The Chargers finished third in the AFC Western Division every year from 1966 to 1969.

1967 - San Diego Stadium is dedicated before a crowd of 45,988; Detroit defeats the Chargers 38-17 in San Diego's first meeting with an NFL team.

1970 - The Chargers join the NFL when a merger with the AFL goes through. The Chargers finished third or fourth in the AFC Western Division every year from 1970 to 1978.

1973 - Unitas' 30-yard pass to Mike Garrett against Cincinnati in San Diego makes Unitas the first quarterback to pass for more than 40,000 yards.

1978 - Don Coryell becomes head Coach and Dan Fouts becomes starting quarterback. The following season, Fouts lead the team to the first of three straight division crowns.

1979 - With an iron clad defence, the Chargers bash through the season and hold 8 of 16 opponents to ten or fewer points. Fouts sets an NFL record with his fourth consecutive 300-yard passing game, throwing for 303 yards at Oakland.

1980- Kellen Winslow catches 10 passes for 171 yards and Chargers clinch second straight AFC West title by defeating sandiego 26-17 before 51,785 persons in San Diego Stadium and a national Monday night television audience.

1997 - 62,542 fans witness the Chargers defeat the San Francisco 49ers 20-13 in a preseason game. It is the first-ever game played in the newly-renovated and expanded Qualcomm Stadium.
